American Express files Blockchain based patent

According to a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent filing published on 13th November, American Express has filed a new patent titled “Linking digital images with related records” which is based on the blockchain technology.

The system described in the filing lets a mobile user to click the image of a receipt and applies optical character recognition on the image to output a character string. The strings are then matched with a database and the filing mentions “Any databases discussed herein may include relational, hierarchical, graphical, blockchain, or object-oriented structure and/or any other database configurations.”

Also mentioned in the filing is the importance of blockchain technology –“The blockchain structure may include a distributed database that maintains a growing list of data records. The blockchain may provide enhanced security because each block may hold individual transactions and the results of any blockchain executables”.

American Express Travel Related Services Co. is the travel subsidiary of American Express. It was the entity on the behalf of which the patent has been filed.
