The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has published a warning about taxation requests created by hackers and demanding payments through Bitcoin (BTC) ATMs. Kath Anderson – Assistant Commissioner at the ATO, said that the number of scammers pretending as the ATO has risen this year. The appalling fact is that the scammers have been paid nearly $1 million through different methods such as itunes gift cards and BTC since July 1.
Anderson noted :
“That’s just not how we do business […] November is a prime time for scammers as they know lots of people have tax bills to pay. Be wary if someone contacts you demanding payment of a tax debt you didn’t know you owed.”
